Trenton/Skillman Cast Iron Doorknob

Cast iron decorative doorknob made by Trenton and later by Skillman. Cir. 1897 (Trenton)-1909(Skillman). The top features a dense geometric and floral decoration. Eastlake style. The decoration extends to the underside of the knob. The knob measures 2 1/4"diam. It takes a slightly smaller than standard non-threaded square doorknob shaft.

The knob has a dark patina from rust and some pitting, but is in overall good condition.

Gurney-Tilden

The company was started by two brothers in Hamilton, Ontario Canada as a foundry for the making of stoves and stove parts in 1845 under the name of Gurney and Carpenter Iron Foundry. In 1884, the company came under the name of Gurney-Tilden Company with john Tilden as president. They expanded their offerings to Building Hardware and produced a catalogue of fine hardware in 1902. Building hardware production however, was short live, tapering off around 1910 when the company was taken over by the Hamilton Stove and Heater Company.
