Russell & Erwin 1894 Doorknob

Cast iron decorative doorknob made by Russell and Erwin. Cir. 1894. It features a swirling acanthus leaf decoration on the top with a sunken center. The underside has unique raised bumps. These make it great for gripping. It does not appear that this particular design has a name. Many of the very early designs did not have an identifier other than the catalogue number. The doorknob measures 2 1/4"diam. It takes a standard sized square shaft. Please let us know if you need a shaft and we can match one up for an additional $5.

This Russell & Erwin 1894 Doorknob is an antique item and may show wear due to age. These may include scratches, pitting, patina, finish loss, rust or other general wear. We attempt to include any significant damage beyond regular wear within the description. We make every effort to clean as much paint, dirt and rust off of items while still leaving as much of the original patina as possible. Photos shown are of actual item you will receive. If multiples are ordered, a photo of additional pieces will be sent for approval.

Russell and Erwin / Russwin

Russell and Erwin Manufacturing was established in 1839 in New Britain, CT. under the name of Stanley, Russell & Company. The founders include Henry E. Russell, Cornelius B. Erwin and Frederick T. Stanley. Upon Stanley's withdrawal just one year later, it became Matteson, Russell and Company to reflect a new partnership with Smith Matteson and John H. Bowen. Six years later, the company officially becomes Russell & Erwin. Then, in 1851, it becomes Russell & Erwin Manufacturing Company. The company merges with P. & F. Corbin in 1902, but consequently continues to produce under the Russell and Erwin name. American Hardware and Russwin were also brand names used off and on in conjunction with the Russell and Erwin name. By 1964, the division again separated and was purchased by Emhart Manufacturing under the name Russwin. It continues today under the name Corbin Russwin, owned by Assa Abloy.
